Can Someone Be Gbajúmọ̀ "Without Being Gbajúgbajà?

The answer is yes.

One of the beauties of the Yoruba language is that it encourages us to look beyond appearances.

A person may become Gbajúmọ̀ simply because many people know them.

This recognition may come through entertainment, politics, sports, business, social media, or even a single event that attracts public attention.

However, being well known does not automatically make someone Gbajúgbajà.

Popularity Can Be Temporary

Modern technology has made it possible for someone to become famous within a few hours.

A video may go viral.

A photograph may circulate widely.

A single event may make headlines.

Suddenly, everyone knows the person's name.

That person has become Gbajúmọ̀.

But Yoruba wisdom asks an important question:

Will that person still be remembered with honour many years from now?

Distinction Must Be Earned

A Gbajúgbajà earns respect through consistent excellence, integrity, wisdom, leadership, and meaningful contributions over time.

Their influence does not depend on trends or temporary attention.

Instead, it is built through years of positive impact.

This is why many distinguished scholars, teachers, traditional rulers, community leaders, inventors, medical professionals, entrepreneurs, and public servants may rightly be described as Gbajúgbajà.

Their work leaves a legacy that benefits others.

The Yoruba Lesson

Yoruba culture has always encouraged us to pursue more than recognition.

It teaches us to pursue a life of purpose.

Being known is good.

Being respected is better.

Being remembered for making a positive difference is even greater.

This is the spirit behind the word Gbajúgbajà.
