INTRODUCTION
History is the memory of a people.
When people forget their history, they gradually lose their identity. They begin to rely on others to tell their stories, interpret their culture, and define who they are.
At Omolola TalksTV, preserving Yoruba history, culture, language, and heritage remains one of our highest priorities.
Through Yàrá Ìkẹ́kọ̀ọ́, we have spent time explaining the true meanings of Yoruba words, traditional titles, institutions, and cultural concepts that are often misunderstood or wrongly used today. We have shown that many words we use casually have deep historical meanings that deserve to be preserved.
As we continued that journey, we realised something equally important.
Understanding our language and culture is only one part of preserving our heritage.
Understanding our history is the other.
That is why we are introducing YÀRÁ ÌTÀN—the History Classroom of Omolola TalksTV.
This series is dedicated to exploring authentic Yoruba and Nigerian history through careful research, historical records, and balanced discussion. Our goal is not to glorify anyone, nor is it to condemn anyone. Instead, we seek to separate historical evidence from myths, popular stories, and misinformation.
History is not always comfortable.
Sometimes, the truth challenges what we have believed for years.
Sometimes, it reminds us that great men and women could also make difficult or controversial decisions.
But history loses its value when we hide the parts that make us uncomfortable.
At Omolola TalksTV, we believe that preserving history means telling it as truthfully, fairly, and responsibly as possible. Only then can younger generations understand where we came from, appreciate the complexity of the past, and learn lessons that will help shape a better future.
Sadly, many aspects of African and Yoruba history receive little attention in today's classrooms. Some stories are simplified, others are forgotten, and many are never told at all.
Yàrá Ìtàn is our contribution to ensuring that these stories are not lost.
Throughout this series, we will discuss kings and queens, warriors and merchants, heroes and controversial figures, victories, and failures. We will celebrate remarkable achievements, but we will also confront difficult truths whenever history demands it.
Our first historical series focuses on one of the most influential—and perhaps one of the most debated—women in Yoruba history.
