Kingship Before Politics in Yorubaland.

Before modern colonial and regional governments, kings in Yorubaland were rarely removed by any external authority. Yes, there were traditional ways a king could be removed or forced out, but they were very different from what we see today.

In the olden days, before the twentieth century, kings were not removed by politicians or governments. There was no regional government, no party politics, and no constitution overriding tradition. A king did not lose his throne because of political disagreement the way it later happened.

Kings were the rulers of the land. They held political, spiritual, and cultural authority. There were no governors, presidents, or political parties approving kingship. The throne stood above politics.
