In our previous lessons, we learned that a Parákòyí is not just an ordinary trader. We also learned that every Parákòyí is an Oníṣòwò, but not every Oníṣòwò becomes a Parákòyí.

This brings us to another important question.

Can anyone become a Parákòyí?

The simple answer is:

Yes—but not overnight.

A Parákòyí is not made by wealth alone.

A Parákòyí is not made by owning the biggest shop.

A Parákòyí is not made by driving the most expensive car.

In Yorùbá thought, titles that command respect are often earned through years of hard work, experience, wisdom, and service.

A person may start as an ordinary trader, but through honesty, consistency, good character, and sound business judgment, that person may gradually earn the respect associated with a Parákòyí.

This teaches us an important lesson.

Success is not only about making money.

It is also about building trust.

In the old Yorùbá markets, a trader's reputation was one of their greatest assets. Customers returned not only because of the goods being sold but because they trusted the person selling them.

That is why elders often valued ìwà (good character) as much as wealth.

A business built on dishonesty may make quick profits, but it rarely earns lasting respect.

A Parákòyí understands that business is a lifelong journey of learning.

Markets change.

Customers change.

The economy changes.

A true Parákòyí continues to learn, adapt, and grow while maintaining integrity.

Perhaps that is why the Yorùbá people say:

"Orúkọ rere sàn ju wúrà àti fàdákà lọ."

A good name is better than gold and silver.

This proverb reminds us that reputation is one of the greatest forms of wealth a person can possess.

So, can anyone become a Parákòyí?

Yes.

But not through shortcuts.

Not through luck alone.

Not through wealth alone.

Rather, through years of wisdom, experience, integrity, leadership, and service to others.

That is the true spirit of a Parákòyí.

Key Takeaways

Anyone can begin as an Oníṣòwò.

Becoming a Parákòyí requires much more than business success.

Integrity, wisdom, experience, and leadership are qualities that must be developed over time.

A good reputation is one of the greatest assets in business.

Classroom Question

If you had to choose only one quality of a Parákòyí, which would you choose—integrity, wisdom, experience, or leadership? Tell us why.

Editor's Note

Yorùbá words, titles, and traditions may vary across different kingdoms and communities. This lesson presents the widely accepted understanding of "Parákòyí" while acknowledging that local customs and responsibilities attached to the title may differ from one town to another.
