The invitation came the next morning.
Gold lettering. Official seal.
Government House. Private meeting.
Adanna knew it wasn’t a request.
It was a move.
Governor Kola welcomed her personally.
There are no cameras this time.
No audience.

“I’ve read your work,” he said, pouring her a drink.
“You’re good.”
She didn’t smile.
“I do my job.”
He nodded slowly.
“Then let me make your job easier.”
He offered access.

Inside information.
Visibility.
Influence.
“Why fight from outside,” he asked softly, “when you can sit at the table?”
Adanna placed the glass down untouched.
“I’m not interested in comfort.”
For a moment, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Something… sharper.
He stepped closer.
Voice lower.
“Everyone has a price.”
Pause.
Even quieter.
“Even integrity.”
Adanna held his gaze.
Then, walked away.
