S1:EPISODE 4

The Past.

Evening shadows stretched quietly across the compound as Omotola stepped onto her balcony, her phone still in her hand. She had just closed her shop, but her mind wasn’t resting.

Aisha.

The name refused to leave her thoughts.

Somewhere downstairs, the generator hummed to life. The sound reminded her how quickly power could disappear. How quickly control could shift.

She didn’t hear Tade walk up until he spoke.

“She’s not just anyone.”

Omotola’s shoulders stiffened. “Who?”

He didn’t look at her immediately. His eyes were fixed on the street like he was expecting something.

“Aisha,” he finally said. “She’s my past. My… complication.”

Omotola let out a dry laugh. “Past complications aren’t supposed to show up uninvited.”

“They do,” he replied quietly, “when they’re not done with you.”

Just then, a black SUV rolled slowly past the compound. The windows were tinted, but not enough to hide the presence inside.

Omotola caught a glimpse of her.

Elegant. Composed. Watching.

“That’s her?” she asked softly.

Tade’s jaw tightened. “She built an empire while I was still trying to survive. Her family controls half the market I used to work in.”

Omotola’s heart skipped.

Her skincare brand was small. Growing. Built with sweat, mistakes, and late nights.

And now she was hearing that she might be standing in the shadow of something much bigger.

“And you?” she asked carefully.

Tade exhaled slowly. “I found out things. Fraud. Laundering. Numbers that didn’t add up. Lies dressed in expensive suits. I exposed it.”

Omotola stared at him. “You did what?”

“Our engagement ended after that. I walked away. Quietly. I refused to stay and pretend.”

The word engagement hit her harder than she expected.

“You were engaged?”

“Yes.”

Silence settled between them.

“I left the war,” he continued, “but not the scars. And I never thought I’d meet you in the middle of something I tried so hard to escape.”

Before she could respond, there was a sharp knock on the balcony door.

Omotola jumped.

Aisha stood on the other side of the glass.

Up close, she was even more striking. Calm. Polished. Dangerous in a way that didn’t need to be loud.

Her eyes settled on Omotola.

“Be careful who you build with,” she said gently.

Her gaze shifted to Tade, then back.

“Some men destroy everything they touch.”

Omotola felt something twist inside her. Fear. Doubt. Curiosity.

She looked at Tade.

For the first time, his calm expression had cracked. His hands were slightly clenched at his sides.

In that moment, Omotola understood something clearly.

This wasn’t just about love anymore.

The world around her had just grown bigger.

And darker.
