World Day of Social Justice: Building a Fairer and More Inclusive Society

The World Day of Social Justice serves as an important reminder that peace and development cannot be achieved without fairness, equality, and respect for human dignity.

Social justice means providing everyone, regardless of gender, background, ability, or economic status, with equal access to opportunities, rights, and protection.

It is much more than an act of giving.

Social justice is about creating people, oriented systems.

In Nigeria, just like in many other parts of the world, the manifestation of social injustice varies.

It could be in the form of unequal access to education, unemployment, gender inequality, poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to basic healthcare.

Such problems have their impact mainly on the most vulnerable in societywomen, children, persons with disabilities, and low, income communities.

Nevertheless, there are still examples of individuals and initiatives that are strongly resisting injustice.

In Nigeria, SERAP (Socio, Economic Rights and Accountability Project) is one of the organizations that have been at the forefront of advocating for the government to be transparent and accountable and for the rights of the citizens to be respected and protected.

BudgIT is another example of a group that works towards making government budgets simpler so that ordinary Nigerians can understand how public funds are being utilized, which is a way of promoting fairness and accountability.

Moreover, individuals like Aisha Yesufu have been using civic activism as a tool for demanding good governance and social inclusion, especially of women and young people.

At the grassroots level, social justice is what those teachers who educate children without even basic facilities do, healthcare personnel who serve people in remote areas, and youth initiatives that create opportunities for skill and employment development. women girls also get the same social justice as men and girls in every aspect of their life and also workers get their fair rights, the old are protected and disabled persons are included. A society that excludes any of these groups will be at loss. However, if they are empowered, the communities will be more vibrant and resilient.

Omolola Talkstv sees storytelling as a leverage for social justice. Bringing out voices with the help of stories, revealing the truth and enlightening the public are the ways we raise awareness and bring about change. Our platform is a vehicle for dialogue, accountability, and empathy, because justice is a thing that starts with the people who are informed about it.

On the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice, lets all take a moment to ponder our different parts as a single person, leader, or a community. There are several easy but significant ways to bring a better world such as speaking against injustice, backing the fair policies, teaching others, and showing respect to the people.

A fair society is the result of a long journey and with regular deeds, empathy, and bravery, it is even achievable.

Happy World Day of Social Justice
