Throughout this module, we have learned that a Parákòyí is more than a trader. We have explored the difference between a Parákòyí "and an Oníṣòwò, and we have seen why the title is associated with wisdom, leadership, and commercial excellence.
But this raises another important question.
What truly makes a Parákòyí?
Is it wealth?
Is it the size of a business?
Or is there something much deeper?
In Yorùbá culture, success has never been measured by money alone.
Our ancestors believed that a person's ìwà—their character—was the true measure of greatness.
This is why the Yorùbá says:
"Ìwà l'ẹwà."
Good character is true beauty.
A person may own many shops, control great wealth, and employ hundreds of people, but without integrity, respect, and honesty, such a person would struggle to earn lasting honour in the community.
A true Parákòyí is recognised not only because business has brought prosperity but because that prosperity has been built on trust.
Trust is the foundation of commerce.
Customers return to businesses they trust.
Partners invest in people they trust.
Communities respect leaders they trust.
A Parákòyí understands this.
Another quality of a true Parákòyí is patience.
Many successful businesses are not built overnight.
They are built one customer at a time, one decision at a time, and one lesson at a time.
Quick success may attract attention, but patience often builds a lasting legacy.
Humility is equally important.
No matter how successful a Parákòyí becomes, there is always something new to learn.
Markets change.
Technology changes.
The customer needs change.
The willingness to keep learning is one of the greatest strengths of every enduring business leader.
A true Parákòyí also believes in lifting others.
Rather than seeing every young entrepreneur as a competitor, a Parákòyí shares knowledge, mentors others, and helps the next generation grow.
This spirit of mentorship has always been part of Yorùbá commerce.
It reminds us that success becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.
Our ancestors also placed great value on reputation.
They often reminded us:
"Orúkọ rere sàn ju wúrà àti fàdákà lọ."
